On January 16, 2010, at the routine rally “Day of Solidarity with Belarus” was held across from the Balrusian embassy in Washington, D. C. The main theme of the protest was the issue of Internet freedom in Belarus.
Representatives of Belarusian youth organizations and movements in the United States distributed informational materials on the draft decree “ On Measures for Revising Use of the National Segment of the World Wide Web”. According to the draft, websites and Internet users would be strictly controlled by the government as well as a special unit of the Presidential Administration. Activists have compared the situation of government internet control in Belarus, to that of North Korea, China and Iran.
